On 6 March 2017, I launched my writing career with the publication of my debut novel, The Journey Home. A work of literary fiction, this book explores issues of the mind, body and spirit on a path of self-development.
Set in Kent in July 2014, this is the story of Julia, a 40-year old personal assistant who takes two weeks out of her busy career schedule to spend some time at home, trying to make sense of her life and the crazy world around her. We are taken though Julia's deepest and darkest thoughts and deeds as she travels along her journey to find out her purpose in life. Through facing up to her past failures, she is able to let go of negative emotions and embark upon a path towards freedom, forgiveness and peace.
It's a story of great friendship, love and resolution. Although the world is very much an alien place, there are kindred spirits who help Julia along her way - critically, Jim, Julia's husband; and Marg, an unknown work colleague who becomes one of Julia's best friends.
Julia concludes that the world is abnormal but it has to be in order to provide the training ground for developing character, practising patience and finding peace, happiness and love. Julia discovers she is alive! Ultimately this is a story about letting go of anger and travelling towards freedom and happiness in an affirmation of one's life.
The Journey Home is available in paperback and on Kindle here.
The Artist is the sequel to The Journey Home and was published on 2 December 2019. A work of literary fiction, this book explores themes of self-doubt, brokenness, faith and love.
Julia Hamilton is surprised to find she has a gift for oil painting. But before long, she starts to dream of a new life as a full-time professional artist. She discovers that the art world is a rollercoaster ride and not as straightforward as it seems.
Julia is desperate to leave her soul-destroying PA existence but her struggle with self-doubt prevents her from taking the leap of faith. Physical burnout and emotional turmoil follow, as she watches the life she once had fall apart. She searches her soul for answers and writes an artist’s prayer for help.
It is only through trying to understand why her life has become so broken that Julia is able to gain the strength to leave behind everything she knows in search of her dream.
Does she have what it takes and, ultimately, will she succeed?
The Artist is available in paperback and on Kindle here.
